CiBiX Challenge: Fostering partnerships for scaling Nature-based solutions to enhance rainwater capture and management
4 November – Hamburg (Germany)
Storm surges and urban flooding is a major climate risk for the city of Hamburg. Hence, effective rainwater capture and management are incorporated into the city’s Climate Plan. Nature-based solutions (NBS) play a crucial role in enhancing such climate adaptation measures.
Hamburg has already launched several NBS initiatives, such as incentive and funding programs to spur private investment. However, the majority of NBS is still concentrated in public spaces and buildings. NBS integration across the city will need to expand in order to provide the adequate ecosystem services needed to support Hamburg’s dense urban structure and growing population.
To tackle this, current CiBiX workshop aims to connect the city of Hamburg and its partners with the private sector to explore NBS market growth opportunities and identify viable business models. Bringing diverse stakeholders together to jointly explore barriers and opportunities related to NBS investment will gather new insights as well as help to identify potential partnerships.

CiBiX Challenge: Advancing GRW: Green Roofs and Walls in Milan
12 November – Milan (Italy)
The City of Milan aims to scale up the number of green roofs and walls from a surface area baseline of 3% to 1.000.000 sqm of roofs having at least 10% of greening. However, accelerating investment in nature-based solutions (NBS) requires increased support and participation of private stakeholders including businesses, citizens and property owners.
The adoption and implementation rate of NBS by the private sector is still limited across the city. Persistent barriers include: finance shortages, legal and technical constraints, maintenance costs as well as a limited understanding of the direct and indirect co-benefits of NBS. To enhance the value proposition of NBS cities and businesses need to work together.
This deep dive collaboration workshop will increase support for scaling NBS. Knowledge exchange during the workshop will focus on solutions for the planning, design and implementation phases as well as re-design and adaptive investment for existing built infrastructure.

CiBiX Challenge: Raising the circularity ambition of the electric mobility transition
19 November – Barcelona (Spain)
The shift to electric vehicles is underway – transforming urban mobility systems with the promise of confronting climate change and improving air quality. Yet cities face growing concerns over the environmental and resource impacts of such as recyclability of key parts of e-vehicles or the overall lifecycle impacts of e-mobility infrastructure are hindering the overall sustainability of this transition. By looking at the different life stages of products and infrastructures, the circular economy offers cities and businesses an opportunity to collaborate on the sustainability of e-mobility services and infrastructures.
In this interactive workshop, private sector representatives and city practitioners will look at how business solutions can operationalize circular economy principles in e-mobility services and infrastructures. The workshop will focus on three key areas:
- Circular design and procurement;
- Circular use models;
- Circular end-of-life planning.
